SATA Leadership
The Society for the Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia is led by a dedicated Executive Board and Council of transplant anesthesiologists from leading institutions across North America.

Message from the President
Dear SATA Members,
It is a privilege to serve as President of the Society for the Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia (SATA). I am grateful to Dr. Gebhard Wagener for his leadership and to the many members who have helped the Society grow and mature over the past years. SATA today is stronger and more vibrant than ever, thanks to their commitment and vision.
As we look ahead, one of my main priorities will be to ensure that SATA continues to evolve as a truly equitable and inclusive professional home, a place where all transplant anesthesiologists, whether their practice focuses on cardiothoracic or abdominal transplantation, can find support, educational resources, and meaningful opportunities to participate in the life of the Society.
Our goal is to make SATA a community that represents the full spectrum of our specialty, where collaboration replaces boundaries and where everyone has a voice. We will continue to develop educational initiatives and scientific programs, expand national and regional meetings, and strengthen our collaborations with other societies, including ILTS and SCA, to advance education, research, and quality in transplant anesthesia.
SATA’s greatest strength has always been its members, their dedication, creativity, and shared commitment to improving the care of transplant patients. I invite each of you to stay involved, bring new ideas, and help us continue to move the Society forward together.
Thank you for your trust and support. I look forward to working with all of you in the months ahead.
Warm regards,
Lorenzo De Marchi, MD, FASE
President, SATA · Professor of Clinical Anesthesia, Director of Transplant Anesthesia, MedStar-Georgetown University Hospital
Our Mission
Since 2011In 2011, members of the anesthesia community who cared for transplant patients created an informal society allowing participants to share information and ideas designed to improve donor and recipient care. The intent of this society was to harness the enthusiasm and motivation of transplant anesthesiologists to drive innovation in the fields of abdominal and thoracic transplantation and intensive care. The society membership articulated three guiding principles: to provide a common meeting ground for scientific development, to increase anesthesia presence in related collegial transplant societies and organizations, and to advocate for the professional interests of transplant anesthesiologists.
The Society for the Advancement of Transplant Anesthesia (SATA) was legally incorporated in 2016 to solidify a home base for transplant anesthesiologists. SATA endorses the concept that integrating the anesthesiologist into all aspects of transplant patient care and policy development ultimately benefits the best interests of the patients.
